Most Bar staff know just enough about ALPS to be dangerous. We do those CLEs on ethics. We write articles for the bar journal. We sponsor a table at your annual meeting. We offer social media content. But have we ever truly relayed to you the rest of the story?
Join us for an interactive discussion to learn more about one of your Bar’s most valued partners. Learn how we serve your members, how we think about our product (we’re more than just an insurance company) and how our mission is aligned around member value and making lawyers better practitioners.
You’ll hear from ALPS President and CEO David Bell about the company, how we were formed, and what we stand for. David will be followed by ALPS EVP Chris Newbold, who will discuss 10 specific ways ALPS works as an extension of your Bar for the betterment of your members. Let’s be sure we’re fully aligned in all we do!

Presented by Nolan Haims, Nolan Haims Creative, Microsoft PowerPoint MVP
Have you ever participated in an educational program and simply been wowed? During the pandemic, the ALPS management team came together for a presentation by Nolan Haims and walked away with an entirely different perception of PowerPoint and how to create compelling visual presentations. Volunteer Leader Track
June 3, 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. MST
Presented by Cory Amron, Women Lawyers on Guard Co-Founder, Corrine Parver, Women Lawyers on Guard Co-Founder, Wendi Lazar, former commissioner of the ABA’s Commission on Women
Sexual harassment in the workplace has exploded into societal consciousness with a force not felt in 25 years. Thanks to the #MeToo movement, we’ve heard a lot about sexual harassment in the entertainment industry and other non-legal settings. But what about the legal profession? Women Lawyers On Guard deployed a nationwide survey of the legal profession because of hearing many sub-rosa stories of current sexual harassment and serious misconduct. Others, however, thought it was a problem that had come and gone for legal workplaces. Who was right? And what responsibility do Bars bear in addressing this issue? Hear about some extremely interesting findings and creative ways to address this scourge in the legal profession.
Animal Weapons, The Evolution of Battle and What Bars Can Learn from Beetles (Say what!?!)
Executive Director Track | Volunteer Leader Track | Bar Staff Track
June 8, 12:00 – 1:30 p.m. MST
Introduction: ALPS EVP Chris Newbold
Presented by Douglas J. Emlen, Evolutionary Biologist, Author of Animal Weapons
Post-Presentation Discussion Moderated by ALPS EVP Chris Newbold
What can one of the leading evolutionary biologists of our time, Professor Doug Emlen, teach us about bar associations? You’d be surprised! One of our most popular speakers in the 30-year history of the ALPS Bar Leaders Retreat, Doug Emlen returns to delve into the story behind the stunning, extreme weapons we see in the animal world — teeth and horns and claws — and what they can tell us about the way humans develop and are tempted into arms races. As the Seattle Times commented, “Emlen’s book, “Animal Weapons” on animal warfare reveals a world far more fascinating and intriguing than one we could summon with our imagination.”
Following the presentation, join us for a thirty-minute facilitated discussion with ALPS EVP Chris Newbold as we unpack Doug’s findings and creatively apply them to challenges faced in the Bar world. Buckle up and prepare to never see beetles quite the same way.
